How To Use The 333 Rule To Help Your Kids At School

Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Do you have a child who deals with anxiety or stress? If the answer is yes, then there’s a chance you’ve tried a wide variety of solutions that might not have worked as well as you wanted. Many children in school deal with stress and anxiety, so you shouldn’t feel so alone. But it can be very hard watching your child struggle to deal with it.

We know that you want what’s best for your child, but sometimes, you might not know where to start. There can be many different ways to help deal with anxiety, but many people don’t know about the “333” rule. This rule is not meant to permanently solve anxiety but to help curb stress levels temporarily.

Keep reading this blog to learn more about this rule and how you can use it to help your child deal with stress and anxiety. And maybe you might find the 333 Rule helpful for your own stress.

How Using The 333 Rule Can Help Your Child In The Classroom

So, What Exactly Is The 333 Rule?

The 333 rule is a simple technique that many people with anxiety find helpful for dealing with moments of high anxiety and regaining their calm. The rule consists of looking around, finding three objects you can see, listening for three sounds you hear, and, lastly, moving three parts of your body.

Why Should Your Child With Anxiety Use The 333 Rule?

Think back to a time in school when you were struggling with anxiety. Was there any method that you used to calm your nerves? Was it similar to the 333 rule? Did it help your anxiety? If the answer is yes, think about how the tactics you used helped you, and think how they might help your child.

Using this simple technique can help reduce anxiety levels in moments of high stress, especially in the classroom. Using the 333 rule can direct your child’s focus from worries and anxiety to something different. And this can provide immediate relief from their anxiety.

When To Use The 333 Rule

Maybe your child has test anxiety, or they’re getting ready to do a presentation in front of the class, or maybe they’re even getting ready to go to the cafeteria. Whatever the stressor may be, try to practice the 333 method with your child and help them identify moments of high stress in the classroom setting that would be appropriate to use.

Even if your child isn’t at school, encourage them to use it when they feel anxious. If they’re feeling overwhelmed at the grocery store, or a stressful family reunion, or any environment that can cause anxiety, the 333 rule can be used.

How To Help Your Child Implement The 333 Rule In Their Life

While there hasn’t actually been any research to show that this technique reduces overall anxiety, many people with anxiety who use this method find that it helps momentarily and could even prevent panic attacks. Despite the lack of research, this technique has worked for many people and might even work for your child.

So have your child try using this new technique and maybe even modify it in a way that works best for your child. They could find three colors instead of three objects, or they could listen for three different voices rather than three different sounds. As long as their method of the 333 rule works for them.

What To Do If The 333 Method Doesn’t Work For Your Child

Seeking professional help for your child dealing with anxiety is a great idea. While you won’t want to intervene in therapy, you may consider asking your child’s therapist about how to calm anxiety at the moment and how you can figure out a plan to help your child in moments of high stress when your child’s anxiety levels need to be brought back down.

If your child deals with anxiety very frequently at school, we suggest taking a look at this blog to learn more about how to help them manage their stress. It might even be a good idea to talk to your child’s school counselor and let them know about your child’s anxiety.
